A British crown dependency, Sark is a small island located in the English Channel, with a total population of around 600 people. Finance, crafts and tourism are the main industries on the island of Sark. The area occupied by the island has 5.45 sq. km. (2.1 sq. mi.). One interesting bit of information is that Sark was the last territory from Europe to give up the classic feudalism structure, in 2008. They began dismantling their feudal system in 2007, so they could comply with the Human Rights European Convention. Right now, they are switching to a chamber with 30 members, out of which 28 are elected. Their first election was held in December 2008. Sark is a zone that is car free, so only tractors, bicycles and horse drawn vehicles are allowed on the island. The island doesn’t have an airport and flight over the island is not allowed. There is one school in Sark, which addresses the education for residents aged 5 to 15. The rest of the education is usually finished in either Jersey or Guernsey (UK).
